Sophians, are you out there?

Greetings friends,

Welcome to this site.  If you have found your way here, chances are that you and I have something in common.  I am a Christian, an Anglican priest to be specific.  Over the years, I have loved and followed Christ, but too often I have seen in the history of the church a narrowness of mind and heart which has little to do with the God of Love (indeed, the God who IS Love) proclaimed and embodied by Jesus of Nazareth.  As I have engaged with perspectives such as liberation theology, ecofeminism, queer theology, and other faith and justice mandates, I have heard the voice of the Spirit speaking in my heart and mind.  As I have asked, over and over again, “what IS the gospel?  What is the actual good news in our place and time?”, gradually an answer has emerged for me.  So here it is, the gospel revealed to me by Sophia, Lady Wisdom, the Spirit of the Living God:

God is Love, and Her Body is All Creation.  She is a Tree of Life, Who Gathers Her Children in Love.

For me, that is the bottom line.  That is the lens through which I now view the scriptures, the traditions, the actions and convictions of my faith.  As I attempt to sort the good news from the bad, that is the “creed” which I use.

And I suspect I am not alone.  Does this gospel resonate with you?  Does it speak to something deep inside you, something yearning to be born anew?  Perhaps you too are a Companion of Sophia…

The Ecumenical Companions of Sophia is not an organization with a membership list and bylaws to observe.  We are a well-kept secret, a community of Spirit coming into being in the heart of many churches, and outside the church as well.  We are a conversation which needs to be entered, and a conversion which calls to be embraced.

I invite you to walk with me during the days and weeks to come, as I flesh out this site with the thoughts and revelations which have come to me from Sophia.  Your responses, and your prayers, are most welcome.

Yours in the deep peace of Christ,

Shawn +
